The future of the Memphis Grizzlies in Memphis appears brighter than ever.
According to recent reports, the Grizzlies are nearing a long-term lease agreement that would keep the franchise at FedExForum for more than two additional decades. The team’s current lease expires in 2029, but discussions involving Grizzlies president Jason Wexler and the Greater Memphis Chamber have centered on securing the organization’s long-term future in the city.
For Memphis, this development extends far beyond basketball.
The Grizzlies are one of the city’s most recognizable institutions, generating economic activity through home games, concerts, special events, tourism, and downtown development. A long-term commitment would provide stability for local businesses while reinforcing Memphis’ status as a major-league sports city.
Since relocating from Vancouver in 2001, the franchise has become woven into the fabric of Memphis. From the “Grit and Grind” era led by Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, and Mike Conley to today’s squad headlined by Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies have built a passionate fan base and established a unique basketball identity.
A lease extension would also eliminate future relocation speculation, allowing the franchise and city leaders to focus on continued investment in downtown Memphis and the arena district.
While details of the proposed agreement have not yet been finalized, the momentum toward a long-term extension sends a strong signal: the Grizzlies and Memphis appear committed to one another for the foreseeable future.
For a city that has embraced its NBA team for more than two decades, that’s welcome news.
